Deacon on molestation charge gets bail

The deacon of a church in St Catherine who is accused of sexually molesting a 12-year-old girl was granted $250,000 bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

In applying for bail, defence attorney, Donovan Williams, told the court his client was not a flight risk and had a steady place to live.

He told the court his client would honour his obligation to the court.

Resident Magistrate Ann-Marie Nembhard granted bail on condition that the accused has no contact with the complainant and return to court on July 22.

The allegations are that the deacon was arrested and charged after a report to the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) resulted in an investigation. It was revealed that he was caught in the bathroom of the complainant who alleged that the accused had been constantly molesting her.

An investigation was launched which resulted in the arrest and charge of the accused.
