NUFF QUESTIONS, LICKLE ANSWERS!

with Blakka Ellis

Our people nuh easy you know! I have not done a stand-up comedy performance in Jamaica for two years now. Yet, people still buck me up on the road and greet me with 'Yow Blakka, gi mi a joke nuh!' What dem tek comedian fah? Each time they meet a priest do they fall to their knees and confess their sins? I want to know if every time dem buck up a doctor dem drop dem pants and ask fi an injection. Or when dem buck up police, if dem ask fi two baton lick! How people so provoking? Ahee sah...

And talking about comedians, how come singers sing the same old songs that we already listen to on CD, play on ipod, and watch on music video, and we rail up and bawl forward, yet if a comedian repeat a joke everybody ready fi send on di boo? I have no answer to that question. Do you?

formalising polygamy

Then I read Miss Kitty's column on Monday and she was asking where all the good men gone. She says many women are looking and are unable to find a good man. I want to ask this: since men appear to be in short supply and so many lonely women a cry, why we don't seriously look at formalising polygamy? I know many people will nyam off mi head for that, but hey, I'm simply asking a question. I really don't know the answer. I know there is enough of me to share though. OK, I'm just joking!

What I also know, is this: 'The more I find out is the less I know' - that's a line from a song titled 'There are more questions than answers' taken from Johnny Nash's 1972 album 'I can see clearly now'. Well look here nuh; I always have a few silly questions bubbling up in my head till my eyes dem get foggy. And, unlike Mr Nash, I don't know when I will be seeing clearly.

Check this: several high school athletes will be denied the opportunity to shine at the annual track and field championships this year, because their teachers and administrators failed to meet the deadline for submitting entries. My question is this: how will those teachers and administrators respond when those same students fail to meet deadlines for academic and other assignments?

boring waste of time

And next thing; a big, long-drawn-out commission of inquiry is currently ongoing. Some people find it entertaining and some people think it's a grand, boring waste of time. I have not given it enough attention to form a reasonable opinion, but based on what I have read, I have some questions: 1. Is there really any difference between the meaning of the words remember and recall?

And how can somebody answer 'I don't recall' about a dozen times to questions about things that happened a year or two ago, while refraining to talk to another person based on something she remembers him saying 30 years ago?

But the biggest question I have regarding the commission is this: how come it is called the Manatt-Coke Commission of Inquiry, if neither Manatt nor Coke will be testifying? How come? Maybe I should ask JPS!
