CHAMPS STARS

( L - R ) Traves Smikle, Chanice Porter

Undoubtedly, Traves Smikle is one of the most talented ever Jamaicans in the throwing events. He has put the country on the map in event after an outstanding performance in 2009 when he garnered bronze in the event at the World Youth Championships. Smikle became the first ever Jamaican to gain a medal at the global level in throws.

A finalist in the event at last year's World Junior Championships, he has been in great form this season. At the Grace Jackson/Queen's meet, he threw the discus to a new national junior record (NJR) of 63.96 metres. Before that at the King of the Road meet, he had broken his former teammate's Chad Wright's mark in the event, with a throw of 61.40 metres.

With great competition expected from his teammate Ashania Miller at Champs this year, he could very well extend his new NJR.

Chanice Porter is a very seasoned campaigner who has represented the country at the junior level. She was second to Edwin Allen's Kimberly Williamson at Central Champs in the high jump, with a personal best of 1.82 metres. The jumpers also has good speed as she has competed for her school in the 4x100-metre relays since her Class IV days. Her performance in the long jump last year was one of the highlights of the meet and her good speed could be used to some effect again, pushing her even further in the horizontal jump.
