Lawyer granted bail

Forty-year-old attorney-at-law Richard Harris was granted bail on Wednesday in the sum of $50,000 when he presented himself in the Portland Resident Magistrate's Court to answer to the charge brought against him.

Members of the Anti-Corruption Branch arrested and charged Harris with attempting to pervert the course of justice after a report was made by a complainant in a court case in which he was involved.

Harris, who is representing 31-year-old Calvin Hayles in a case of assault at common law and illegal possession of a firearm, is accused of approaching the complainant and requesting that he drop the case against his client.

Harris is also accused of telling the complainant that he would instruct him in what to say to the judge.

Harris is scheduled to return to the Portland Resident Magis-trate's Court on Friday, March 25.
