Bajan businessman fined for ganja

A Barbadian man who has pleaded guilty to having 2.7 kilogrammes (6lb) of ganja in his possesion was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He is David Clarke, 37, business operator, who was ordered to pay $9,600 or six months for possession of; $19,200 or six months for dealing; $48,000 or six months for taking steps to export ganja; $50,000 or six months for conspiracy and 12 months' imprisonment, to run concurrent and consecutive.

Allegations are that in February the accused was held at the Norman Manley International Airport with 2.7 kilogrammes of ganja in his lugage.

"I paid $14,000 for it and my friend said I would reap US$4,000 per pound," the accused allegedly said when he was apprehended.
