Monymusk, Downs look to hold momentum

Clarendon's Monymusk and Manchester's Downs will attempt to use momentum from their Flow Champions Cup wins earlier this week to cut into the lead established by front-running Rivoli and Meadows in the South Central Confed Super League.

Monymusk played out of their skins to embarrass Digicel Premier League team Village 4-1. Michael Dixon, who has scored three goals in the Super League, starred in the team's giant-killing performance, netting a hat-trick.

Downs were equally impressive, but against a less quality opponent in Standfast FC, whom they overwhelmed 5-1.

Monymusk, lie third in the overall standings on 19 points, and have been unbeaten in their last four games.

They are four points adrift of leaders Rivoli, and two below Meadows. Today they will face an eleventh-place Mile Gully team, who are showing signs of improvement, garnering five points in their last three games.

Monymusk coach Doyen Mullings reckons the team must now look past the Village performance and focus on the real deal.

"It's great that we played so well against Village, but winning that game and any more in the Champions Cup can only give us a little fame and some prize money. It's the Confed league that is going to push us up to the next level, so the Mile Gully game is more important for us to win," Mullings told Star Sports.

"We want to finish the cross-zone on a high, and get ready for the return legs where we can seriously look at taking on the top two," he added, in explaining his team's focus in terms of the format of the Confed Super League.

Monymusk's challenge apart, the Confed Super League has so far been a two-horse race. Downs and New Bowens, who share fourth position, are closest on 13 points.

In last week's round, Rivoli regained the lead after they defeated Tru-Juice 2-0, with the previous leader Meadows losing ground and surrendering their one-point lead after being held to a 1-1 draw by Newlands.

In other results of the weekend, Monymusk travelled to Bodles to beat that team 2-1, New Bowens defeated Newell 2-0 in the battle of newcomers, while Downs and Mile Gully ending 1-1 in their Manchester derby. The Dela Vega vs Naggo Head encounter was postponed to Ash Wednesday, however, rain washed that game out.
