Santos pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the opening round of the Flow Champions Cup when they turned back the challenge of premier league outfit Reno 4-2 on penalties, yesterday, at the Bell Chung field, after the teams had played to a nil-all scoreline following full and extra time. The Carlton Dennis-coached Santos, who currently play in the Super League, were perfect from the penalty spot, thanks to conversions from their captain Terrence Allen, Demetrio Billet, Andrew Morris and Oneil Gayle. Reno's Andre Patterson and Davion Thorpe scored for their team, while Kirk Wright hammered his kick on to the right upright. Santos' 19-year-old custodian Mark Bryan then pulled off a smart save to thwart Jahshane Foster's attempt and earn his team the win. The Westmoreland-based Reno, who sit 13 places above their opponents, failed to put away any of the numerous chances that they created during the course of the game. Reno came closest to scoring on the stroke of full-time when Kenroy Hutchinson's goal bound header was cleared off the line by Santos' Ricardo Martin. Santos coach Carlton Dennis was pleased with his team's performance. "This brings back memories of the good old days, Santos vs Reno, we used to beat up Reno," Dennis shared. "I told the boys if they believe in themselves they can do it and we played a good game today; probably our best game of the season in terms of discipline and character," he added. Wendell Downswell, coach of Reno, was very disappointed with his team's poor finishing. "We created numerous opportunities, which we failed to convert, and if you fail to convert your chances once it goes down to penalties it is about nerves and temperament," he added. Michael Dixon (7th, 47th and 89th) netted a hat-trick to lead Monymusk United to a shocking 4-1 win over ninth-place premier league team Village United, at the Monymusk Sports Complex. Henry Forrest (39th) netted Monymusk other goals, while Andrea Nickles (78th) pulled one back for Village. Nicholas Dodd's 38th-minute strike was enough for Arnett Gardens to beat Seba United in their encounter at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. Downs scored the biggest margin of victory in the round as they got past Standfast 5-1, courtesy of goals from Conroy Sinclair (32nd), Danville Cornwall (42nd, 81st), Jason McLean (87th) and Gary McDonald (90th). Elgin Mitchell got the consolation goal for Standfast in the 89th minute.
