( l - r ) Nesta Carter, Yohan Blake - ap photos Some of the world's leading athletes will be on show as top local clubs and institutions, including Racers, MVP, UTech, Swept and Sprint Tech are expected to parade their stars in several anticipated thrilling match-ups at the Gibson Relays tomorrow. One of the most anticipated will be in the men's 4x100 metres as defending champions Racers, who will be led by young sprinting sensation Yohan Blake, will be strongly challenged by a Nesta Carter-led MVP team, and a Jacques Harvey-led University of Technology. This is one event track and field fans will not want to miss, as all three teams should be on even terms, as it is expected that Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell will not be in their team's line-ups, which will make the event a more open affair. strong team Following their record run of 38.08 seconds done at last year's meet, the Glen Mills-coached Racers team, who will be going for their fourth win in a row in the event, will be competing in the event for the first time this season. Although they are expected to field a strong team, which could include Blake, Kenroy Anderson, Mario Forsythe and Marvin Anderson. With a quartet of Powell, Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Ainsley Waugh the MVP team raced to a record run of 38.56 seconds to erase the 2006 Western Relays record of 38.87, and with or without Powell they will still be competitive. The University of Technology coach Paul Francis is confident that his team could upstage both teams. The members of that UTech quartet are Nicholas Watson, Winston Barnes, Kemmar Roach and the vastly improved Jacques Harvey. be competitive Not to be outdone, the new boys on the scene, Sprint Tech, who are being conditioned by national coach Maurice Wilson, who have their base at G.C.Foster College, should also be competitive. Like the 4x100 metres it should be a close battle in both the male and female 4x400 metres. In the men's race, once again the Racers team will be strongly challenged with Swept Track Club also expected to be in the money, following their Western Relays victory where they clocked 3:08.25 to get the better of Sprint Tech 3:08.35 in a close battle. Both MVP and Racers will be well represented by a host of top senior athletes, who have represented the country at the highest level, when the clash in the women's 4x400 metres gets under way. MVP will be led by Kaliese Spencer, who has been creating waves in the flat 800 metres and with her now being a part of a 4x400 metres team it will be interesting to see what she offers. Their team should include the likes of World and Olympic 400 metres silver medallist, Sherika Williams, World and Olympic 400 metres hurdles gold medallist Melaine Walker and World Championships representative Christine Day. Racers will not be short of ammunition though as their team will include Shereefa Lloyd, Sonita Sutherland, Davita Prendergast and former national senior 400 metres champion Rosemarie Whyte. - R.G. |
