Bail extended in visa-scam case

A woman implicated in a visa scam had her bail extended in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The matter is now set for trial on May 16 as Peta-Gaye McKenzie pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

It is alleged that between October and November of last year, the accused took $297,000 from the complainant to secure visa and work permits to USA, Canada and England.

However, she could not supply the documents as promised as it was later revealed that she does not know anyone from the embassy and high commissions representing those countries.

Subsequently, the complainant is reported to have asked for her money to be returned but a refund was not forthcoming.

It is alleged that after the money was not returned, the complainant reported the matter to the police.

The report was said to have been made on February 25, despite assurances that the situation was not a case of fraud.

It was further alleged that McKenzie told the woman in an attempt to reassure her that her reputable father had created access for visas on numerous occasions and could take care of everything.

McKenzie was later taken into custody at the Duhaney Park Police Station and later charged with obtaining money by false pretence.
