Residents protest bad roads

Paula Gordon, Star Writer

Residents of Camberwell, St Mary, yesterday cut down several trees and threw them across roadways in an effort to block-in their Member of Parliament (MP), Tarn Peralto.

The residents became angry after a meeting with the MP who they say has not been doing enough to address the poor road conditions in the community.

They say it has been over 25 years since the roads have been fixed.

In addition to the attention they received, the residents caused some amount of inconvenience as Peralto and his team had to clear the road blocks themselves in order to leave the community.

When contacted, Peralto told THE STAR : "I was having a meeting up in the square, guess some of the youngsters were not happy with the situation in the community."

Although he understands the plight of the residents, he noted that the situation cannot be addressed without resources. "If I had the resources it would have been done already," he said

The MP, who has held the seat for a little over three years, added, "They are being unreasonable because after 25 years they can't expect me to do everything in the time that I have been there."

In the meantime, he said that work has already started on the first phase of the project and within the next few months the roads in Camberwell will be addressed.

Information from the Port Maria Police Station is that roads were still blocked up to press time.
