The Carreras group on Monday handed over a $2.7-million cheque to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to aid in the repairing of police service vehicles.

The handover took place at the Office of the Police Commissioner on Old Hope Road, St Andrew.

Speaking at the handover, managing director of Carreras, Richard Pandohie, pointed out that Carreras has continuously contributed to issues of national development, particularly national security.

Pandohie also indicated that even though the JCF's hierarchy should be congratulated for setting and communicating tangible targets, the lack of resources diminishes their capacity to effectively carry out their mandate.

Hence, he said, Carreras has responded with its contribution towards vehicle repairs.

Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said repairs have been done on more than 86 service vehicles to date. He also pointed out that increased mobility is a major part of the JCF's prevention and deterrence phase of policing.

Minister of National Security, Dwight Nelson expressed appreciation to the Carreras Group for its contribution. chief technical director in the ministry, Vivian Brown, who delivered the minister's remarks, indicated that a well-oiled fleet of vehicles is integral for police mobility, as they respond to emergencies and take on the challenging task of law enforcement.

"Having experienced some reduction in criminal activities last year, there is heightened awareness that the containment of criminal activities and the maintenance of law and order are fundamental to a secure state. This is achievable by a police force that is motivated and mobilised," the minister said.
