Man charged for stolen vehicle
Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A man who was allegedly seen driving a car 14 months after it was stolen was given $500,000 bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Michael Smith, 40, of Greater Portmore, St Catherine was before the court on a charge of receiving stolen property.

Attorney-at-law Courtney Maxwell in applying for bail told the court his client did nothing fraudulent.

"Your honour, my client did not change the licence plates or anything else on the vehicle. It is clear he had no fraudulent intentions," Maxwell said.

He added that Smith was not a flight-risk and had a fixed address.

Bail was granted on condition that he return to court May 18 when the matter will be mentioned.

Allegations are that on October 18, Smith was seen along Washington Boulevard in St Andrew. He was driving a 2002 Honda motor car which was stolen in Portmore in August 2009.

The owner called the police and he was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.

In his court appearances, he explained that he bought the vehicle and was awaiting the transfer of the title.
