Accused fraudsters remanded again

The two men who are accused of breaching the Cyber Crimes Act were again remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Shawn Smith and Joscelyn Clarke are expected in court today when their matter will be mentioned as the file is incomplete.

Allegations are that on January 7, the police received reports that persons at a prominent hotel in Kingston were using fraudulent credit cards to make reservations. The accused were reportedly apprehended when the police visited the hotel.

It is alleged that investigations done by the police led them to a 2006 Honda motor vehicle, registered to a car rental company, which Smith had paid for with a fraudulent credit card. Further checks led the police to another rental company where Smith allegedly used a fraudulent credit card to lease a grey 2010 Suzuki Vitara motor car.

It is alleged that this vehicle was not returned to the car rental company.

It is reported that between August 24 and 31, Clarke rented another car from a different car rental company in a different name using a fraudulent credit card.

Allegations are that Smith has been named in a number of fraud cases accusing him of renting vehicles using fraudulent credit cards and then selling them to unsuspecting buyers.
