Lawmen probe claims that ... Bogus cop runs up $200,000 bar bill
The police in Clarendon have in their custody a man who allegedly pretended to be a cop and ran up a tab of some $200,000 at a bar in the parish.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the 36-year-old man was held last week after the proprietor of the bar grew weary of his promises to pay the money owed.

It is said that the man owed the exorbitant amount of money through food and liquor he took from the bar between mid-December and the end of January.

A police source from the parish, who is familiar with the case, told THE STAR it was discovered that a bonafide cop had introduced the man to the bar. "What makes this situation a little funny is that a real cop actually took him to the bar in the first place. That was a bit silly of him if you ask me," the corporal from the Clarendon police told THE STAR.

The man is said to have returned to the bar the following day and told the proprietor he was a cop also. His word was apparently good enough for the proprietor who allowed the man to get food and liquor on credit.

The man is said to have at times brought a number of his friends to the bar where he treated them to drinks and food as they desired.

A month after being allowed to get items on credit, when being asked to make a payment on what he owed, the man reportedly told the proprietor his money was tied up in a business transaction and promised to withdraw the money from his bank account as soon as the financial institution allowed him to do so.

With that said the man continued to purchase on credit.

The scam was revealed two weeks ago when the proprietor saw the cop who introduced the other man to the bar and asked if he was on duty that day. It was then that the truth was revealed.

Reports are that the policeman and the bar proprietor confronted the man who tried to run from the bar but was held by other men who were present.

He was taken into custody where he remains and is yet to be charged.
