Johnson sticking with Sheffield

Jamaica's Jermaine Johnson

Reggae Boy Jermaine Johnson is determined to stay at English League One club Sheffield Wednesday, despite being out of contract at the end of this summer.

The 30-year-old winger signed for Sheffield in January of 2007 and despite seeing the team fall out of the Championship division last season, is determined to stay on board.

"I love this club," Johnson told the Sheffield Telegraph website sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk.

"I don't want to leave. If an opportunity came for me and the club didn't want me, I'd have to move on.

"But I'd love to stay. I'm confident I can stay."

Johnson saw a £300,000 bid from League Championship club Nottingham Forrest rejected last summer, and despite falling out of favour in recent times, relegated to the bench by manager Alan Irvine behind Chris Sedgwick in recent games, and the current struggles of the club, is intent on staying put.

"As a player you always know that if you play well, people come in for you; I wasn't really concentrating on it that much. I want to stay at this club. I want to do well.

"We know we can do much better. In training everyone is pumped up and trains well. We just need to bring that into the games and everything will come."

Relegated just last season, Wednesday were expected to put on a strong showing in League One, but the outfit have struggled to date and find themselves lying midtable, which Johnson admits is a surprise.

points

"We need to get points. I thought we were going to be running this league, but it is hard to play in.

"There are more challenges, there is no time on the ball.

In the Championship there is more passing. This is a really rough league," Johnson was quoted as saying.

The player, who experienced an injury plagued 2009-10 season, will have a fresh chance to prove his worth, following the Owls appointment of former Bolton Manager Gary Megson yesterday.
