On-demand convenience - Watch it when you want |
|||||
The revolution is being televised! Television is a great technological device and it has changed so much over the years. Its basic purpose, to show moving images, remains the same. But how we get those moving images now is just remarkable. Previously, we received content passively. TV shows, movies and news were provided on a schedule, a schedule set by the 'powers that be' and we had to comply. Watch when 'they' say we should watch. Then came devices like AppleTV (which I still love) and Roku along with services like Hulu and NetFlix. No need to leave work early, beat the traffic, go to the video store, rent the movie, watch it quickly and return it before late fees applied. These devices and services delivered content to us when we wanted it. Unfortunately, these US-based services did not adequately accommodate our needs here in Jamaica. We had to use a US billing address, pay with a US credit card and in some cases spoof our IP address to avoid geo-location services that lock out non-US residents. That is no more. Flow OnDemand and the new HBO OnDemand service make convenient TV not just possible, but practical. Advantages - you watch what you want, you watch when you want, you only pay for what you watch and you pay in Jamaica dollars when you get your bill. It is just that simple. Kids programming, movies, TV shows and documentaries are all available at the touch of a button. There is even adult content - if you are so inclined. Local movies and plays are also available for on-demand viewing. And, new content is added every month! Making the offering even better is HBO OnDemand. The Flow OnDemand had been around for some time, but the HBO OnDemand was launched just last Tuesday. I am not a big sports person myself, but they have sports in addition to their documentaries, kids content and movies. But what appeals most to me are the series. Remember Sopranos, Sex In The City Watch it on demand. Love Big Love, Spread Your Enthusiasm, Real Time and more, all available when you say, not when 'they' say. Let's face it, we love to curl up in front of the TV at home to watch something good. Even with all the other entertainment options available, the family TV in the living room remains the centre of our entertainment. At least now, we can dictate the timeline for TV time. Tech glitch: "I want to use Microsoft Office for my school assignments, but I can't afford the software," writes Jordan Tech fix: There are a number of free options to the Microsoft Office suite that are almost as good. In the cloud (online), Google Docs allows you create, edit and open Word and Exel files. Another good option is OpenOffice.org and both services are free. Have a tech glitch of your own?
