Knibb stars at Big Shot meet
Raymond Graham, STAR Writer

St Jago High's Class Two athlete Kellion Knibb was the outstanding thrower at last weekend's Big Shot meet at St Hugh's High School in St Andrew.

The 2010 Carifta and Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Under-19 representative registered three wins, all in record distances.

Knibb first erased her own record in the Under-17 shot put with new mark of 11.71 metres, beating her one-year-old mark of 11.41m.

In the 15-16 discus, she had a throw of 43.99m to improve on the 41.04m set by teammate Fayon Gonzales last year. Knibb ended the day in style with an impressive throw of 42.55m in the javelin to better her old record of 37.00m.

Gonzales was also in good form, as the Class One athlete warmed up for upcoming major meets with two solid performances. She first took top honours in the discus with a throw of 43.82m to get the better of St Hugh's High's Devene Brown, 42.17m, then returned for a second-place finish in the Under-19 javelin with 33.07m.

Munro College's Emmanuel Onyia, who played second fiddle to former Calabar High thrower Chad Wright for most of last year, gave an early indication that he will be hard to beat this year in the Class One shot put. He won with a throw of 17.92m, relegating the Calabar pair of Ashinia Miller (17.25m) and Traves Smikle (16.05m) to second and third spots, respectively.

Calabar's Fredrick Dacres maintained his good early form in the 16-18 age group discus with a throw of 45.94m to take first place ahead of Kingston College's Chadwick DaCosta (45.50m) and Spanish Town High's Mark Davis, 36.73m.

Other male winners on the day were Kingston College's André Helps and St Jago's Jeffrey King. Helps won the Under 16 discus with a mark of 41.04m with Foga Road's Sanjay Reid getting second with 40.43m. Calabar's Basil Bingham, 40.11m, was third. King won the Under 19 Javelin with 51.38m to get the better of Munro's Rojae Gayle, 51.10m.
