Mother, daughter remanded for attempted drug smuggle |

A 62-year-old woman and her 35-year-old daughter who attempted to transport drug to Trinidad pleaded guilty and were remanded in the Corporate Area resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. The duo, Matilda Cooper (mom) and Zione Campbell, are to be sentenced on February 9 when they return to the court. Both accused were ordered to submit their fingerprints to the police. The court also ordered that background checks be made on them. The two defendants pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in, taking steps to export and conspiracy to export ganja. They were arrested and charged after they were caught at the Norman Manley International Airport. luggage The court heard that on Sunday, January 16 about 1:15 p.m., Cooper and Campbell checked in to board a flight to Trinidad when Campbell's luggage was x-rayed and was found to contain rectangular-shaped parcels. Further checks by airport security personnel found two false compartments in Campbell's luggage containing compressed ganja. When checked, it weighed 6.6 pounds. Campbell, the court heard, was then reportedly asked if she was travelling alone and she replied, "no, a me and mi mada." She was then cautioned by security personnel but reiterated, "a no me alone, me mada have a suitcase to." Cooper was then sought, her luggage searched and false compartments were also found containing ganja. When checked, the ganja found in Cooper's bag weighed 9.9 pounds. They were subsequently arrested and charged. |
