Twenty-five JDF members receive honours

Twenty-five members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) yesterday received the first bar to the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service during a brief ceremony at Kings House.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen presented the Bars to the soldiers, headed by Chief of Defence Staff Major General Antony Anderson.

The First Bar to the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service was presented for periods of service which ended December 31, 2009.

Minister of National Security Dwight Nelso said it is important that meritorious service be rewarded, particularly in the security forces, whether the JDF or the Jamaica Constabulary Force, to those who rise above normal expectations and perform excellent duties for their country.

He said the ceremony also provides motivation for security personnel to continue performing at the highest level.

Describing the ceremony as very important, Nelson said the occasion shows the security personnel appreciation for what they have done, and further indicates to them that they are expected to continue along that path.

Major Elaine Patricia Wray was the only female to receive a First Bar. Other persons who received the Bar are Captain Sydney Innis; Lieutenant Colonels Geoffrey Roper, Sean Prendergast and Desmond Edwards; Majors Christopher Lobban, Oswald Brown, Clive Brown, Roy Wade and Norman Beckles; Warrant Officers Errol McKenzie, Headley Drummond and Martin Spalding; Sergeant Marshall Zambia Fitzgerald; Corporal Andrew Ward and Private Granville Henry.

The Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service is awarded to officers and other members of the uniformed services who have performed distinguished service, or have displayed distinguished conduct for bravery. A bar to the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service may be awarded for any additional meritorious service.
