Costly assault on constable

A man who was accused of assaulting a special constable, who tried to arrest him recently, appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The accused, Durun Gardener, pleaded guilty with explanation to assault at common-law and guilty for resisting arrest.

He was eventually fined $10,000 or 30 days for the assault charge and $2,000 or 30 days for resisting arrest.

The accused told the court that on the day of the incident, the police were trying to force him into a police vehicle when he became involved in a tussle with the constable who claimed that he pushed him.
