Speedy Cummings Bolts up at Villa |
|||||
Omar Cummings Speedy Jamaican striker Omar Cummings, now on trial with Barclay's Premier League team Aston Villa, has reportedly been drawing many comparisons to sprint king Usain Bolt because of his pace, a gift that he says comes from his track background. The 28 year-old, raised his stocks this year with a team-leading 14 goals this year to trigger Villa's interest and is now hoping to impress Villa boss Gerard Houllier into shelling out the US$3 million price tag that has reportedly been slapped on his head by his employers, MLS Cup champions Colorado Rapids. Cummings has reportedly surprised a few with his blistering pace, and while speaking to Birmingham-based publication Sunday Mercury, Cummings, admitted that he actually has a track background, spoke about his run in with Bolt and shared his awe of Jamaican athletes. "Track is a big part of Jamaican sport and Jamaican culture," Cummings was quoted. "I started (track) at an early age, it was at primary or basic school age." "The reason Jamaicans are so fast is because of the genes and the training methods, probably a little bit of both," he added. Cummings, who has scored 30 goals in his 94 appearances for the Rapids and has been lauded for his speed, went on to share his awe of Olympic and World 100m and 200m champion and double world record holder Bolt, pointing out that he has met the sprinter before and has witnessed his training methods. "I've met Usain but I've not had any tips from him," said Cummings in response to a question about the sprinter's influence on his style of play. "People often ask me who is faster but it's definitely Usain." "When I train with the Jamaican national team, the athletes also practice at the same facility sometimes so they are right there with us," added Cummings, who has scored five times for Jamaica in his 21 appearances. "Personally I have not had any tips from him (Bolt) but of course you can pick up any hints when they are there training," said Cummings. "You see them (athletes) practising and its just amazing."
