STAR FILES … Nadine Sutherland

Nadine Sutherland (l - r ) THEN, NOW

THE STAR has been the leading entertainment newspaper for 59 years and so we have built up an impressive collection of photographs of some of our favourite entertainers.

You name them, we have them. So in our latest feature we will be digging deep into our archives to show you some of the oldest pictures of these artistes. After showcasing pictures of entertainers such as Sizzla Kalonji, ZJ Liquid and Lady Saw, this week we look at Nadine Sutherland.

Nadine Sutherland has been wowing fans with her sweet smile and even sweeter voice and lyrics for many years.

Sutherland began performing in 1980 and balanced her recording career, which was managed by her parents, with her education. She studied business administration at college and when Bob Marley heard her work, she was recruited to Tuff Gong.

Sutherland performed outside of Jamaica in 1982 at a memorial concert for Bob Marley, alongside Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makers, the I-Threes and the Wailers. In 1986 she toured supporting Bunny Wailer in the USA along with Leroy Sibbles of the Heptones.

She found work as a backing vocalist at Gussie Clarke's Music Works studio, and by the late '80s she recorded over Gregory Isaacs' 'Mind You Dis' rhythm on the song Mr Hard To Please. During the early '90s she worked with the then top producer in Jamaica, Donovan Germain, at his Penthouse studios. She enjoyed other hits such as the 1993 song with Terror Fabulous, Action and the re-release of Buju Banton's 1992 hit Dickie which featured her vocals.

She has become widely known in recent years for her work as a judge on the local talent search programme, 'Digicel Rising Stars'.
