Road to redemption - Rivoli, Fitzgerald covet DPL return |

Relegated from the DPL last season, Rivoli began a new campaign in the South Central Confed Super League by whipping fellow St Catherine team De La Vega United 5-0 in their season-opener at the Spanish Town Prison Oval. The strong impression made early, albeit against a side coming back after a long competitive layoff from the top level, coincides with the ambition of Rivoli coach Calvert Fitzgerald, once a top exponent in the country's highest league. "It's convenient," Fitzgerald explained when asked about the decision to coach outside of KSAFA, where he has pursued most of his coaching jobs. The 50-year-old, who hails from Bull Bay, gave up coaching duties at August Town in 2009 but has since been overlooked for any of the vacancies that have cropped up in unstable Premier League coaching environments like Benfica, St Georges, Arnett Gardens and Humble Lion. In the last two years, his abilities have been put to use in the Corporate Area business house football competition, where he has landed the title with Scotiabank, also winning the Inter-bank title earlier this year with the same team.
However, a new programme at José Marti High, as well as the Rivoli job, should keep him confined to the Spanish Town area for a while. Quite notably, his presence at Riovli is also part of the inevitable challenge a top coach, who has had a tough run, faces having to find work where it is available rather than where one would rather be. "Sometimes you have to take what is available instead of remaining inactive," he said. Rivoli's own intention to get back to the Premier League suits him just fine. "The management had a serious talk with me and we saw where we can do it (qualify) in one year which will be good for me." Conditions at the club fall within the lines he has dealt with in the past, and he says he is quite familiar with a number of players who could impact heavily on the way Rivoli perform. Among them were the recent scorers, namely Fidel Anderson, who netted a hat-trick, Okane Williamson and Derrick Planter. In addition to their good start to the Confed Super League, Rivoli have also made it to the semi-finals of the St Catherine KO, sponsored by Lime. |
