Attorney-at-law Christopher Townsend has chastised the police for videotaping his client in the precinct of the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

Townsend is representing Renard Harrison who is charged with assaulting a policeman at the Spanish Town lock-up.

"Your honour. I do thank the Constabulary Communication Network for this wrecklessness. It simply means that my client can never face an identification parade again," Townsend reasoned.

The attorney told the court that he is not going to sit and let Jamaica become a police state.

Meanwhile, his client was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and is to return to court on March 21.

The attorney continued to bash the police as he told the court that his client was taken into custody after the vehicle in which he was travelling was said to have almost collided with the commissioner of police's vehicle because of reckless driving.

"He was placed in custody and all the others, including the driver, released. After weeks, and not been charged, it took me 17 calls to get any action," the attorney said.

He told the court that his client was targeted, as he was not fighting in custody.

A senior police agreed that from information received Harrison only instigated the fight in which the policeman was attacked when he went to quell the situation.

The lawyer said someone will have to pay for the time his client has spent in jail.
