A Portmore landlady accused of placing padlocks on her tenant's door to force him out is scheduled to return to the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court for breaches of the Rent Restrictions Act. Charged with breaching the act is Joyce Thomas of Waterford. Thomas pleaded guilty before Resident Magistrate (RM) Marcia Dunbar-Green on Tuesday when she appeared. She told the court she would like to explained what happened why she had to commit the criminal act. ''Your honour, I was home when I went to use the bathroom that is shared between my tenant and I. When I look into the tank, I found a plastic wrap with 14 gunshots in cornmeal,'' Thomas said. She told the court that she had a quarrel with the complainant and became fearful for her life, therefore she lock up the house and left. The RM asked her what has become of the ammunition and she responded that she had given it to the complainant. The judge told her she should have given it to the police. Thomas was told by the court that although she have given an explanation, the offence is serious and having pleaded guilty she is to return for sentencing on February 15 next year. r.t |
