GC Foster take Intercol double

G.C. Foster College and The Mico University College were crowned Intercol Division I and II basketball champions recently, following the playing of the respective finals.

Both finals were best of three. In the Division I final the Elfrato Remekie-coached G.C Foster team, who were the defending champions, did not have things all their own way as they had to pull out all the stops to get the better of the vastly improved Moneague Teachers' College team. In their first meeting at the Edgewater Community Centre, the G.C. Foster team drew first blood as they won 57-47, but the Moneague team drew level two days later when playing at home and by 10 points,72-62, to set up a final decider.

In the final encounter, which was played on Tuesday night in Edgewater, the defending champions came out in a no-nonsense mood and comprehensively defeated their opponents 60-15, walking away with the top title for the fifth time.

It was the first time Moneague were playing for the title and having to play away from home might have been a factor. The margin of victory in the final game proved G.C. Foster was far superior as they led from start to finish and Moneague did not get a chance to get into their rhythm.

In the Division II final, the Mico team had a clean sweep of Northern Caribbean University (NCU) as after squeezing out a close 54-52 win at home, the Mico team led by coach/player Howard Harvey, had a convincing 76-68 win in Mandeville.

Both teams had an easy path to the finals as in semi-final action the unbeaten Mico team overwhelmed Brown's Town Community College 69-15, while NCU stopped Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) 62-54.

With their victory, the Mico team will get automatic qualification to Division I next season.
