Man fined for helping thief escape

A rather dramatic story was heard in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday concerning the escape of an alleged thief from security and police personnel.

The accused in the matter, 34-year-old Flavius Foulkes, had to answer to numerous charges including simple larceny, impersonating the police, breaching university security procedures and conspiracy to steal.

Foulkes was represented by his attorney.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, a van was parked on the premises of the University Hospital.

Some time after, a man was seen searching the vehicle, and was pointed out to the owner of the vehicle, and an alarm was made.

The man had also allegedly broken into the vehicle by breaking off the lock to the rear door.

He later fled into Golding Avenue where he was chased by residents of Mona Commons, which is opposite the entrance of the University Hospital.

The culprit was later held and beaten by residents of that community, before he managed to escape in a gold Toyota motor car that drove up to his aid.

It was said that the driver of that car shouted "Police, Police" to allow the culprit to break away from the crowd and flee into the car.

Police personnel later locked down all the entrances and exits to the hospital and Foulkes, believed to be the driver of the car, was accosted.

Foulkes was fined $50,000 or six months for simple larceny, $10,000 or six months for breaching the university security guidelines and $30,000 or six months for aiding a felon.

All other charges were withdrawn.
