Health ministry heightens cholera-prevention plan

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has heightened surveillance at all ports of entry as part of its Cholera Prevention and Control Plan.

According to a release sent to the media from Minister of Health Rudyard Spencer yesterday, as part of this programme health teams will be interviewing persons who arrive from Haiti prior to them being processed by immigration.

The team will ascertain whether persons have symptoms that could be associated with cholera. If persons display symptoms, they will be referred to a health facility for medical attention, the release further stated.

In addition, all travellers from Haiti will be issued a health alert card which includes the ministry's contact information and advises that they seek medical attention should they develop symptoms.

For more information, persons may contact the MOH National Emergency Operations Centre at 366-1105 or 366-1110.

On Wednesday, health officials in Haiti had said that the death toll from the cholera outbreak jumped to more than 400, and more than 1,000 new cases had been detected.

The total number of persons infected had risen by 1,978, bringing the total number of cases to 6,742.
