Ex-Caymanas contract supervisor gets bail extended

A former contract supervisor employed to Caymanas Track Limited, who is accused of defrauding $1.8M, has his bail extended until February 25, next year.

He is Leighton Coates of a Portmore address.

When Coates appeared before Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green, he pleaded not guilty.

Allegations outlined in court are that Coates, over a period of time, collected the money and produced fictitious invoices. The court was told that after the first invoice was discovered in August, further checks led to the probe of a number of other fictitious invoices.

It was revealed that the fraud commenced in January 2009.

Documents were shown to the court indicating that Coates would collect the money and then forge the signature of the person who should have got the payment.

The police was called in and investigations led to Coates being taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with obtaining money by false pretence, uttering forged documents and forgery.

It was revealed that he was charged with more than 20 counts of fraud.
