Stewart on Bristol City chopping block? |
|||||
Damion Stewart Reggae Boy Damion Stewart could be among a few players facing the axe as English Championship club Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown has instructed manager Keith Millen to trim the squad when the transfer window opens in January. The decision comes following a record annual loss of £11.8 million announced by the club earlier this month. With the report acknowledging that significant investment in the playing squad is partly responsibly for the loss, Lansdown wants the 35-man squad reduced to 24. Davis joined Bristol for an undisclosed fee in July after playing 151 league games for Queens Park Rangers, securing a three-year deal under then manager Steve Coppell. However, with the manager resigning just a month later, the 29-year-old centre back has found life difficult, failing to make any impact on the current squad. In fact the towering defender has only managed six appearances since signing, finding the back of the net once. "I think the difficulty we have is that we bought players in when Steve (Coppell) was manager and those players are not necessarily first choice, as far as Keith is concerned. "Therefore, he has had to bring in players of his own and blend them into a team that is beginning to play a bit now. That does cost you. a lot of dismay "I have no qualms with Steve Coppell, but we have to recognise it did cause a lot of upset at the football club, a lot of dismay and uncertainty, and it did cost us money," Lansdown was quoted as saying on the Bristol evening post website www.thisisbristol.co.uk. "We have players who need to go and find football somewhere else because they are not going to find it here." Stewart last featured for the national team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July of last year, but that appearance ended in controversial circumstances as the player was sent home by coach Theodore Whitmore for disciplinary reasons. |
