Man sentenced for ganja

A man who pleaded guilty to importing half-pound of ganja into the islands was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He is 28-year-old Mark Moxam from Kingston 11.

Allegations are that on the October 28, Moxam arrived on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Trinidad and Tobago. During a routine security check, he was stopped and interviewed by the police and his luggage searched.

It is alleged that Moxam confessed to ingesting ganja. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he expelled 32 pellets of ganja wrapped in latex gloves.

In addition to the nine-month prison sentence, Moxam was fined $800 or six months for possession of ganja, $1,600 or six months for dealing in and $4,000 or six months for taking steps to import the drug.
