Delhi, India:

Commonwealth Games triple jump champion Trecia Smith has been seen everywhere, doing everything around the Jamaican camp in Delhi during the Commonwealth Games; the proverbial Jack of all Trades Smith, who added the 2010 Commonwealth title to the gold she won at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki and the gold and bronze she won at previous Commonwealth Games in 2006 and 2002, respectively, has been a source of great help not only with the team's medal ambitions, but also in the coaching and medical areas as well.

She spent most of her out-of-competition days working along with chief team doctor Praimanand Singh and the four overworked physiotherapists who were brought along to tend to the injuries of the athletes.

her skills

Not a lot of people know, but Smith, a seven time US Collegiate champion, is also the proud holder of a master's degree in physiotherapy from the University of Pittsburg and she was more than willing to put her skills to good use in aid of her fellow athletes.

"It's something that I really love to do actually," Smith said.

In fact, the 34-year-old world-class athlete, who has also won gold at the Central America and Caribbean Games, actually practises physiotherapy whenever she can find the time and is hoping to one day operate her own clinic.

"I have actually been practising for a while, since 2002 as a matter of fact," said Smith.

"I was asked to assist because we were short-staffed in that area and I was delighted to be given the chance to do so."

"It's my profession and I hope to perhaps have my own clinic someday. For the moments though, it's something that I do part-time but I love it and it's definitely a long-term goal of mine," Smith added.

Smith claims to hate the very idea of her becoming a coach, but as national triple jump champion Wilbert Walker would attest, she could make a fine one in the future.

Walker credited Smith for helping him to his personal best leap of 16.85m, after the former Mannings High student was seen passing several tips to the young jumper.
