Accused 'cop beater' gets bail

There was brief laughter in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday after a police constable admitted that he was 'beat up' by a man, who was smaller in stature to him.

The accused, Michael Phillips, is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, unlawful wounding, resisting arrest, malicious destruction of property and assaulting police.

acting suspiciously

Allegations are that on September 25, of this year, two men were observed acting suspiciously across from the Gold Street Police Station in downtown Kingston.

Two constables who observed the behaviour of the men then went to search them. The men were instructed to put their hands up but did not comply with the request of the constables.

The court heard that one of the men then began punching one of the constables all over his upper body. The man then intentionally tore the uniform shirt of the constable.

The other constable then tried to apprehend the man but he resisted vigorously, the court further heard.

verbal persuasion

However, the constable later managed to restrain the man with the assistance of verbal persuasion from members of the community. He was then taken into custody.

The beaten constable, who it was reported had wounds to his mouth and hands and swelling and bruises to his chest, was later taken to the Kingston Public Hospital to receive medical treatment.

Phillips had his bail extended until November 12.
