Businessman caught with drugs, knife

A man charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act admitted to the having ganja and a knife but not cocaine when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court recently.

He is Henry Moncrieffe, a 38-year-old businessman from Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Moncrieffe, who pleaded guilty to possession of ganja and possession an offensive weapon, told the court he did not have any cocaine in his possession.

His lawyer, Everton Dewar, said his client is not a flight risk and he has a steady place of abode.

Bail was granted in the sum of $60,000 with a surety and Moncrieffe is to return to court on January 6, 2011.

Allegations are that on September 19 about 1:45 p.m., a police party was on patrol along Oxford Road in the Old Capital when Moncrieffe was spotted with a scandal bag that he threw away. He was held by the police and ordered to retrieved it.

When retrieved, it was found to contain several pieces of white powdery substance resembling cocaine along with ganja. A search of Moncrieffe's person also revealed a knife.

He was subsequently charged.
