19-y-o extorts $200,000 from teen?

A 19-y-o graduate who allegedly tried to extort money from a 15-y-o student is now being investigated by the police. The younger boy is said to have been threatened and told he would be beaten if he failed to make payments.

The man, Delmar Williams, is accused of extorting at least $200,000 from the Corporate Area high-school student, who told the police that he was so scared that he used his mother's bank card to withdraw money on a number of occasions over a four-month period from 2009.

It is further being alleged that on one occasion, the student was contacted via cellular phone and after a conversation during which he was ordered to make a payment of more than $10,000, another man joined in on the act and also put in his demand of $25,000 before threatening to visit the teen's home and attacking him.

sting operation

A source from the Area Four police told THE WEEKEND STAR that the boy eventually told his parents about the situation.

The police were subsequently alerted and a sting operation was set up during which the alleged extortionist was caught red-handed as he turned up to collect money from the boy. He was subsequently arrested and following intense investigations was charged with obtaining money by menace.

The matter was brought up in the Corporate Area Resident Court on Wednesday.

Police sources told THE WEEKEND STAR that Williams' attorney denied the allegations, claiming his client was only collecting money owed to him. The attorney claimed his client gave money to the youngster to purchase a cellular phone which was not delivered.

Citing the safety of the high-school student as a concern, Williams was denied bail and is to return to court on October 28, when the case will be mentioned.
