Accused refuses to plead, remanded |

Few words were uttered by a man charged with perverting the course of justice, when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The only words from the accused, Clayton Pennant, were, "What you seh?," after attempts were made to plead him on two occasions, by the clerk of the court and then by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey. After it was realised that a plea was not forthcoming from the accused, RM Pusey said to Pennant, "I have no time to play with you." Pennant was remanded until October 13. Allegations are that, on September 7, Pennant appeared as a witness in a murder case against three men. As a result, he appeared in the Gun Court section of the court and gave evidence under oath. The case was then set to be heard on October 5. However, on the arrival of the accused, Pennant told the court the police forced him to tell lies on the accused. Furthermore, Pennant allegedly stated that a clerk of the court threatened him and forced him to give evidence against the accused, and the three men were wrongfully placed before the court. As a result of Pennant's evidence, the case was dismissed against all three accused. |
