Security minister visits slain cop's home

Minister of National Security, Senator Dwight Nelson yesterday visited the family of slain policeman Constable Sheldon Williams, who was killed in St Ann on August 29.

In empathising with the family at their home in Gayle, St Mary, Minister Nelson said the circumstances of the incident were unfortunate and regrettable. He explained that he could understand their pain and anguish.

During the near hour-long meeting, Nelson said it is imperative the investigations into the matter be done thoroughly and expeditiously in an effort to bring closure, and to ensure that the relationship between residents and the police is not further eroded.

Nelson acknowledged that the circumstances of the incident have resulted in escalating tension between the residents and the police, but urged the residents to remain calm and await the outcome of the investigations.

Williams was reportedly shot dead after he shot after policemen who were chasing him when he reportedly fled the Ocho Rios Police Station. His funeral is scheduled for Sunday at the Foursquare Gospel Church in Bagnold Spring district, St Mary.
