South Stars, Orange Hill secure semi-final berths |
|||||
Semi-finalists South Stars of Manchester with the winning trophy in 2008. - file Manchester's South Stars and Orange Hill of Westmore-land secured semi-final spots in the Gleaner/STAR-sponsored Social Development Commission (SDC) National 20/20 competition following contrasting quarter-final victories at Comfort Com-munity Centre. South Stars, the 2008 champions, triumphed over Waltham Park Police Club in dramatic fashion requiring Terrence Dixon's hit of the wicket during a bowl-off after rain prevented any chance of a formal match. The total hits were locked at 2-2 after the first five attempts by five different players. Earlier, Orange Hill secured a semi-final spot for the first time, easily getting past their required target in six overs. Orange Hill were set 66 in nine overs after the Duckworth-Lewis method was used to calculate their target after rain cut short the time allotted to chase De La Vega's 123 for six. De La Vega, who beat South Stars to win the third-place play-off last year, won the toss but struggled to put together a strong total. Captain Wayne Morgan, who had a top score of 154 not out in an earlier match, could only muster 15. David Morgan (no relation) 25, and Shaun Earle 35, contributed most runs as there were only three overs where the batsmen got over 10 runs. They got 12 from the second, 11 from the 11th and 13 from the final over. Orange Hill only scored four runs from their first over in their initial run chase before rain held up the proceedings. When the match resumed openers Chandra Francis and Jason Thompson made a mockery of the revised Duckworth-Lewis target. Twenty-three runs came from the fourth over of the innings bowled by Karl Robinson with the ultra-aggressive left-hander Thompson hitting two massive sixes and a four.
