A woman caught trying to smuggle cellular phones into the Supreme Court Remand Centre was sentenced to nine months imprisonment yesterday, despite her claims that she was threatened to do so. Charged with breaching the Corrections Act is Belinda Brown. a container Allegations are that the accused was visiting her son at the institution. She brought a container of rice and peas and chicken and a bag containing sugar. When the bag was searched, however, two Nokia cellular phones, one with a SIM card, were found. Brown told Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that she was threatened by men in custody to bring the phones. She said they told her they would burn her son if she did not. RM Pusey, however, did not believe the accused who began crying saying she had three children attending school. This story also did little to help her cause. RM Pusey said, "Give your fingerprints to the police and spend nine months with them". |
