Man granted bail in Gun Court

American businessman 64-year-old Philip Martin, of Mandeville, Manchester, was granted bail in the sum of $3 million with sureties when he appeared in the Gun Court yesterday.

The crown is alleging that on June 4, the police saw Martin sitting in a motor vehicle at Silver Slipper Plaza, Cross Roads, Kingston.

He was acting suspiciously and the police searched his motor car and found a firearm in a brown paper bag. The police also found a firearm in his waist. He had no licence for them and he was arrested and charged.

It is further alleged that when Martin was arrested he said he sold firearms for US$480 (J$41,000) each.

Yesterday defence lawyers Linton Walters and Peter Champagnie in making bail applications refuted the allegation that Martin said he sold guns. The lawyers argued that Martin had a viable business in Mandeville so with his economic situation had no reason to be selling firearms.

Supreme Court Judge Leighton Pusey granted Martin bail and ordered that he should report three days each week to the Constant Spring Police Station. He is to surrender his travel documents to the police.
