Car thief held with firearm

A man who robbed a motorist of his motor car on the Church Pen main road in Old Harbour, St Catherine Monday night was arrested.

The 23-year-old man was also found in contravention of the Firearms Act after he was held in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. His identification is being withheld pending further investigations.

Reports are that about 11:30 p.m., the man posed as a potential passenger and boarded a taxi plying the Church Pen route. While in the vehicle, he pulled a firearm and proceeded to relieve the taxi driver of his Toyota Corolla motor car.

The driver alerted the police who, with their quick action, intercepted the vehicle at Gutters district. The vehicle was searched and the firearm - a .38 Smith and Wesson revolver serial number K826022 - with five .38 cartridges and one 9mm cartridge, was found.

The vehicle, firearm and ammunition were seized. The man was subsequently arrested. The Old Harbour police are investigating.
