Student gets 12 months for ganja

A Knox Community College student was sentenced to 12 months in prison yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Jahmille Blair, 20, was sentenced after she pleaded guilty to possession, dealing, taking steps to export and conspiracy to export ganja.

Blair's attorney besieged the RM to be lenient with his client as she is a first-time offender and had learnt her lesson. He asked that she be given an opportunity for reform and rehabilitation. However, the RM said Blair had to face the consequences.

arrested

The court was informed that Blair was arrested after she attempted to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to Trinidad with concealed ganja in her suitcase amounting to 5.9kg. When questioned by police, she said Prince Levy, a UWI final-year student, who is one of the other three accused in the, was responsible for making the arrangements for her to export the drugs. Levy has denied the accusation.

The other persons implicated in the case are, Notsford Daley, and a Trinidadian, and a man identified only as Patrick, who is being sought by police.

Patrick is believed to be the mastermind in the matter. Both Daley and Levy were granted $100,000 bail and are set to return to court on May 25.
