ST Hughs High's Candicea Bernard and Calabar High's Chad Wright stole the spotlight on yesterday's second day of the ISSA Boys and Girls' Athletic Championship at the National Stadium, as they won their events with record breaking performances. Following her record throw to win the girls Class 1 discus event on the opening day, the Michael Vassel-coached Bernard, captured her second record and gold medal of the meet by taking the girls' shot put event with a new mark of 13.24 metres. The throw erased the record of former teammate Micara Vassell who set the mark of 12.87 last year. In the event Sasha Kay Marston of Edwin Allen captured the silver medal with a distance of 11.84 metres as Devene Brown of St Hughs took the bronze with 11.75 metres. record throw As expected, it was a 1-2 finish for Calabar in the Class I boys' discus event, with Chad Wright taking the gold with a record throw of 58.86 metres. Teammate Travis Smikle finished second for the silver with a throw of 58.68 metres, as Oshane Harris of Kingston College took the bronze with 53.57 metres. "The event had the crowd in a frenzy as both athletes traded the record on several occasions before Wright cemented the win. Manchester High's Chanice Porter was also in record breaking mood yesterday, as she destroyed former Holmwood Technical jumper Salcia Slack's 2007 Class II long jump record of 6.11 metres, with a new mark of 6.43 metres. Hydel High school made a successful debut at the Championships as Class IV athlete Amanda Carty gave her school a winning start by capturing the gold medal in the girls long jump event with 5.56 metres. Ashley Baker of Excelsior High took the silver medal with a throw of 5.53 metres and Anastasia Forrester of Manchester High took the bronze with 5.45 metres. continued dominance Wolmer's Boys continued their dominance in jumping events as they took the top-two spots in the boys class III high jump, as Christoffe Bryan took the gold, clearing the bar at 1.85 metres, with teammate Abraham Robertson taking silver with 1.80 metres. In another final yesterday, the girls high jump class III, Vere Technical's Chennell Palmer surprised the Alpha duo of Tatiana Wolfe and Krista-Gay Taylor. Palmer's winning height was 1.70 metres with both Alpha athletes doing 1.65 metres. St Jago's Kevaughn Rattray was also in fine form as he broke the Class III Boys 200 metres record of 22.70 seconds, set by Calabar's Travis Drummond in 2007. Rattray won his semi-final in a time of 22.17. |
