Calabar High's Chad Wright couldn't have given himself or his team a better gift, as he set a new record in the discus on the second day of the Boys and Girls' Championship yesterday. Heaving the discus at 58.86 metres to erase the old mark, set by his teammate and second-place finisher Traves Smikle. Wright believed the mark to be an "excellent birthday gift." "I am very happy, very, very happy," Wright told Star Sports. "It's my birthday and it's an excellent birthday present. Wright was also happy because he was able to contribute valuable points to his team, in what is expected to be a tough battle down the stretch. "I am glad that I contributed points to the team as well." The thrower now hopes that his fellow teammates will continue on the path set by Smikle, who is also the national junior record holder, and himself. "All I want now is for my other teammates to do their best and contribute their points so we can win Champs." greater potential Smikle, the World Youth bronze medallist, also believes yesterday's one-two finish provided greater potential for the team to win Champs. He, however, expressed a bit of disappointment about not winning, but was comforted by the fact that Calabar got seven points from him. "I am feeling disappointed and happy at the same time ... disappointed because my personal goal was to win the event, and happy because I able to contributed points to my team." he said. |
