A man accused of conning an American of several thousand dollars by telling him that he was planning a gospel concert, was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. Charged with obtaining money by false pretence is Davon Stewart. The court heard that Stewart met the complainant when he came to visit. He told him he was a Christian and was planning a major gospel show. The complainant indicated his interest in helping, sent money on different occasions, the court heard. He later found out no concert was being planned. The accused told the court the money sent to him was not for a concert but a gift. To this, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey replied, "So you don't really know him and he's just sending you money like that? I wish I knew someone like that." He said the only thing he told the complainant was that the world would end in 2012 and he wanted to do something before that. The matter is to be tried on June 21. |
