Some students of the Univer-sity of Technology say their Thursday night classes are being disrupted by parties and other social gatherings that occur at the institution's activity centre. The students told THE STAR that they have classes every Thursday night in classrooms that were recently built near to the activity centre, also referred to as 'The Barn'. a party every Thursday One student, who did not wish to be named, said, "They built the new classes at the back near to the Barn and they have a party every Thursday. We are forced to learn in this environment." The student further explained that last Thursday, the centre hosted a major party, which was advertised on radio and music was being played throughout her class. She said the music was not turned down at any point and explained that there are about two blocks of classrooms in the vicinity. The students are also upset that the bus service, which is paid for in their fees, was scheduled to accommodate those who were attending the party last week. She told THE STAR that the bus which usually leaves at 9:30 pm, was rescheduled to leave at 11, to accommodate those at the party. working people "They did not tell us about this new arrangement or anything. All they said was that the selector at the party announced it. So what about those who were not at the party? Some of us are working people, we were on the road from morning, and we had to find our own way home because of this." Director of Advancement at the University, Hector Wheeler, under whose portfolio the Corporate Communications Department falls, told THE STAR that he had no knowledge of the complaints. He said they were never brought to his attention even though he spoke with a representative from the Students' Union recently. He however said, "I will check into it. I will check on the classes. On a Thursday there are mainly club activities, but if there is a clash, we may have to shift the classes to elsewhere where there is quiet. |
