Mom sentenced to 80 hours community service

A mother who concealed money in ice and attempted to give her imprisoned son was sentenced to 80 hours community service yesterday.

Miriam Grant appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magis-trate's Court yesterday to answer to breaching the Corrections Act.

RM Simone Maddix told defence attorney Thomas Tavares-Finson that having read the accused social enquiry report, the accused woman's age and clean record resulted in her decision.

''This offence was non-violent in nature. Although persons need to respect the laws governing our correctional facilities, a community service sentence is what she will serve, '' Maddix said.

Grant's appearance in court arose from an incident in September after she was caught at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Institution trying to smuggle $1,500 frozen in cardboard.

When the officer manning the gate accepted the food from Grant, it was observed that there was something strange about the ice.

Checks revealed the hidden money. The police were called and Grant was charged by Detective Kirk Roache of the Spanish Town Police.
