BRISBANE, Australia (CMC):

Despite missing the four-day tour match against Queensland Bulls, West Indies pacer Jerome Taylor says he will be ready for the opening Test against Australia at The Gabba starting Thursday.

After arriving here, the 25-year-old complained of a stiff body and was rested for the firstclass match, which finished in a draw. His presence was badly missed as Queensland piled up over 600 runs in their first innings.

Taylor, the spearhead of the West Indies attack on the three-Test tour, said his training had been going well and he was anticipating the battle against the world champions.

a very good day

"I had a very good day in the nets and I'm happy with my build-up to the Test matches. Over the coming days, I will continue to put in the work to make sure I'm fully ready for what promises to be a very good series," Taylor said.

"I am fully aware the team will be looking to me to lead the attack and I am sure I will be able to handle that responsibility.

"I can't wait to get out there and bowl. As a fast bowler, that's my thing ... that's my job and I want to get into action. If there is any life in the pitch, it is a plus for us because back home in the Caribbean, we are accustomed to very flat and low wickets."

With regular pace partner Fidel Edwards missing from the tour, Taylor will be called upon to shoulder the burden of the Windies attack as the most experienced member.

The other pacers in the squad possess limited experience as Kemar Roach has played just two Tests while Ravi Rampaul and Gavin Tonge are yet to make their debuts.

Taylor, who has taken 81 wickets in 28 Tests, said the Windies were fancying their chances against the Australians and were preparing diligently for the assignment.

"We have been looking at footage of the opponents and we know the areas where we need to be strong in, both batting and bowling," said the right-armer.

firepower

"We have outlined certain things we will be working on. Australia have a lot of firepower but they are beatable. We are conditioned in our minds to go out and put up a good fight and to take it to the Australians.

"The pressure should not be on us. If we are the underdogs, we are not expected to win but we will be going out there to put up a big show. We believe in our ability and we are confident of doing well."

The first Test bowls off at 10 a.m. (7 p.m. Wednesday, Jamaica time) with the Windies chasing their first series win against Australia in 15 years.
