Bridgeport stormed into the semi-finals of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup following an emphatic 8-0 hammering of Waterford at the Prison Oval yesterday.

Darren Mattocks, the competition's top marksman with 23 goals, scored five goals, in the 36th, 43rd, 45th, 48th, and 70th minutes, including three in the first half in a six-goal performance by his team that wrecked Waterford's season.

Adoah Nikle (21st, 26th ), scored a brace, while playmaker Jamiel Hardware (37th) also netted. The result meant Bridgeport ended the quarter-final round with six points, and advanced as the Group Two winner, on a superior goal difference, over Waterford (six), and Eltham also six, which defeated Norman Manley 4-2, in a match at Constant Spring Sports Complex on the same afternoon.

reaping the rewards

Coach of Bridgeport Anthony Patrick said that the players put in some hard work over the weekend and are now reaping the rewards. "I told the players that whatever the team wants they will get. If they decide to play, they will achieve and they come to play today, and they achieved.

Waterford's coach, Floyd Coke, said that his players had not yet been able to get over the psychological pressure of playing Bridgeport. "I think the atmosphere and the seriousness of the game got to them. They are never sure playing their neighbours and I have to get that out of them. It is a psychological thing. Over the years they have never been really comfortable against Bridgeport," he said.

Bridgeport will on Saturday play St Andrew Technical (STATHS) in one semi-final while Excelsior and St George's square off in the other semi-final at a venue to be announced.
