Child taken from baby throwing mother
Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

The Child Development Agency (CDA) has taken the 10-month-old child that was thrown over a gate by its mother in its custody, while the mother has been remanded for psychiatric evaluation.

The mother, who is 25 years old, is charged with cruelty to a child.

When the case was mentioned in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the mother was told that she was charged with a serious offence. She was told that while the matter is before the court, the child will continue to be in the custody of the CDA.

Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix then ruled that she be taken to a doctor so that tests can be conducted to see the state of her mental health.

As a result, Brookes was remanded until October 27 when the case will again be mentioned.

Allegations before the court are that on September 9 about 7:30 p.m., Brookes visited her child's father and a dispute developed and she left angry.

She returned later with the child, threw it over the gate, and told the father "Hold dis man".

She was later arrested and charged when she turned up at the Spanish Town Hospital and told attendants that the child had fell and hit its head.

The police were subsequently called and she was charged.

Man gets six months for ganja

A 28-year-old man wept bitterly when he was sentenced to six months in jail for attempting to leave Jamaica with 10lb (4.5 kg) of ganja in his luggage.

The accused, Anthony Burrows, pleaded "guilty by reason of force" to the charges of possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export marijuana.

The allegations are that the accused was heading back to Barbados and was in the process of going through security when officers noticed that he was wearing extremely baggy clothes and seemed padded. The court was also told that he refused to be searched. When the police searched him, however, the drug was found strapped to his body.

strapped the drug to him

In his defence, however, Burrows said he was forced to take the drug by a girl he had met while vacationing here and some other people. He said the people took away his passport and driver's licence, strapped the drug to him and took him to the airport. He said he was only caught because he wanted to be caught and refused to take off his ring so the metal detector would go off. He said he cooperated with the police and would be able to tell them where to find the girl.

Burrows burst into tears as he told Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, " I not telling you no lie mam, I swear to God. I swear on the heads of my six children."

Burrows' attorney told the court that her client was the sole provider for his 87-year-old grandmother and is a father to six children, including an eight-month-old.

Despite his pleas, however, Burrows was sentenced to six months for possession or $15,000, $32,000 or six months for dealing in and $64,000 or six months for taking steps to export the drug. In addition, he will have to serve six months.
